We live in a neighborhood, a city, in the country, in a house or apartment, a tent or on the sidewalk. We each customize the space around ourselves. In various eras and cultures, interior living space was apportioned differently, depending on whom we shared the space with. But we all want a roof over our heads, to be able to retreat to a place all our own, no matter how small or endangered. We want to be able to decide whom we share it with. To be tied to a place we want to go back to. We realize there is a difference between "in" and "out." Inside, we are sheltered from others' gazes. When we speak of such a place, we call it "home."
