The Triangle and the Hexagon

Reflections on Black Identity
Publisher La Découverte
GENRE Essay
Keywords Identity
At the intersection of the Atlantic triangular slave trade and the Gallic Hexagone, Maboula Soumahoro recounts her own intellectual journey as well as the social, philosophical, and in short, human difficulties she ran into along the way before finally being able to define her identity as a black woman.

"A daughter of France and the Atlantic, I find myself by ancestry, origins, and personal history in the cultural, political, and intellectual vastness of the 'Black Atlantic', a space profoundly shaped by history. Here I evoke the space, often called 'triangular', that unprecedentedly and permanently connected three continents: Europe, Africa, and the Americas. It encompasses Ivory Coast and the Africa of my parents, and France, my birthplace and current home after many years in North America. Each of these places has its own interpretation of the black body and experience. I give you mine."
