Tomatoes hail from the Americas, reaching Europe by ship in the late 15th century. Tomato plants were first used decoratively in gardens before anyone dared eat their fruit.
Red or yellow, big or small, round or oblong--every variety tastes different!
Tomatoes are a spring plant. They're available all year long right now because some growers plant them in greenhouses to protect them from cold and give them lots of water. They don't taste as good, though, and they're bad for the planet!
