The period from 2017-2022 can be summed up in two events: the Yellow Vests and the pandemic. In both cases, issues of power and rights resurfaced. The democracy and the republic we have inherited rest are founded these two exactly coinciding: no power without rights, no rights without power. Opposing this, the Yellow Vests and mask and vaccine protesters demand powers without rights--that is, sovereignty. Until now, only one sovereignty was recognized: that of the people. The Yellow Vests and vaccine deniers want to replace that with the sovereignty of social networks. In so doing, they have come to serve those who hate the masses.
