Niemeyer in France

A Fruitful Exile
COLLECTION Carnets d'architectes
Category Art
French buildings and designs by the man who built Brasilia.

Architect Oscar Niemeyer died in 2012 on the eve of his 105th birthday, renowned worldwide for his famous projects, especially Brasília. Fleeing his native Brazil's military dictatorship in 1964, he found refuge in France where he received several commissions from the French Communist Party (PCF) and André Malraux, then Minister of Cultural Affairs. The era saw several firsts for him: designing scenery for the cultural festival Fête de L’Humanité as well as furniture, and serving on the jury to select the plans for the Centre Pompidou. This book sheds light on the international career of a man with an expansive personality, one of the last great modern architects of the twentieth century.
