In fifty years, the dominant model of the nuclear family, united for life, has been shattered. The family has gradually become an instrument of self-realization of its members rather than an end in itself, while economic imperatives, increased movement of people, gender equality and the recognition of minority sexualities have disrupted family arrangements.
