Charity is lively and very curious. But in late 19th-century polite English society, proper little girls aren’t supposed to be seen or heard. Since her parents pay her no mind, Charity embarks on a series of adventures to avoid dying of boredom: raising mice, organizing snail races, studying mushrooms, learning Shakespeare by heart... Then she discovers watercolor, and starts painting the animals and landscapes she sees. She goes on to become a naturalist and an illustrator of children’s books. A lovely story of emancipation told through Anne Montel’s magnificent and moving artwork.
