Say the word "desert," and what comes to mind? Endless dunes, oppressive heat. And yet we stopped thinking of them as "deserted" long ago. They are abundantly stocked with plants and animals that help each other to surviving in arid climates. When at last it rains, succulents and cacti fill their leaves and stems, the giant Saguaro even expanding like an accordion as it gorges itself on water. Slurp!
Plants provide food, water, and shelter to creatures like kangaroo mice, Gila monsters, and bats. Camels, those funny-looking humpbacked mammals, store enough fat to live on for five to seven days without food or water. Impressive!
