Age All Ages
Florence, 17th Century. The incredible story of the first woman painter to be officially accredited by Florence's Academy of the Arts of Drawing.

In 17th-century Europe, art is still reserved for men only: a woman can neither enter Florence's prestigious Accademia delle Arti del Disegno, sign her paintings, nor be paid for them. And yet one of them is going to do just that: Artemisia, daughter of the famous artist Orazio Gentileschi, has been perfecting her taste and talent for painting since she was old enough to use a brush. Her father tolerated this when she was a young girl, but once grown, she comes up against the reactionary ideas of her era where the place and importance of women are minimal, if not nonexistent. Artemisia will face long and arduous trials before finally becoming the first woman artist admitted by the Academy, an act for which she is renowned.
