Marseille, Winter 1887: over a thousand women toil away in a tobacco factory, enduring grueling conditions despite recent attempts at modernization. Among these resilient Italian immigrants are Sespo, Teresa, and Rosa, three young cigarette-makers who decide to take a stand. Without the backing of a union or any prior experience, they organize a spontaneous strike when one of them is harshly punished by the management for an unfounded accusation of theft. The events that follow unfold more rapidly and dramatically than any of them could ever have anticipated.
