Paul has worked the night shift for years, never seeing the day. At long last, he decides to fulfill his dream of leaving for Alaska. Upon reaching the airport, he finds his flight has been canceled. Despairing, he trips on the stairs and breaks his ankle. After being discharged from the hospital, he hails a taxi and asks to be dropped at the grand hotel on the city's central plaza, where he gets a room. He then spends the following days observing the plaza below as if he were an explorer in an unknown land. The result is a travel narrative filled with the comings and goings of everyday life in his own town, enhanced by his own imagination: an extraordinary story of the ordinary.
