A major artist of the 20th century, Diane Arbus began her career as a fashion photographer before picking her models from marginalized groups (tranvestites, nudists, the disabled), showing their humanity instead of exhibiting them as fairground attractions. Arbus redefined the limits of what can be photographed, and displayed, and played a vital role in society's normalization and acceptance of these identities outside the norm.
