There are five of them. They are the light in the great night of the sea for the migrants wishing to illegally reach Europe’s shores. The sentries keep an eye on the weather forecast to prevent sinkings, converse with individuals in exile, alert the coastguard, or, far too often, help search for loved ones who have gone missing. They are the spontaneous and informal beacons for the hundreds of skiffs that attempt to make the crossing each year in incredibly precarious conditions.
