November, 1924: rage explodes at the port of Douarnenez. Louise, an outspoken activist, leads 3,000 female workers from the sardine canneries in the biggest feminist strike of the 20th century. Among them is Rose, a young Catholic girl from the countryside. Together, the pair will make a stand against the grueling pace of production, the pittance they're paid, and the exploitation of children. In the course of this struggle, they find love and freedom, but the weight of tradition catches up to them. Louise chooses the freedom of Paris, and Rose a life of conformity. But one day, fate reunites them...
