From Douai to Guadeloupe, by way of Paris, Bordeaux, and Lyon, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore (1786-1859) was intimately acquainted with precarity and job insecurity. The daughter of a capricious mother, she rubbed shoulders with actors, sailors, and the destitute. Pregnant from indifferent lovers, surrounded with admirers (like Balzac) and detractors, she lived only to write. Her encounter with actor Prosper Valmore, her husband and supporter, enabled her to fulfill her dreams. Poet and actress, she gave voice to her pain, hope, and love of life.
