As a witness to the contemporary post-1989 world, Tillmans draws our attention to issues of social emancipation and freedoms that were once taken for granted but are now under threat, to transformations in building community, to popular culture, and to new ways of disseminating information. Avoiding any aestheticization or hierarchy, he presents his works in the manner of an archival catalogue, documenting them by theme, like the shelves of a library, and offering a contemporary panorama of forms of knowledge.
