THE ANIMATED COLORING BOOK

A highly original concept which combines paper and digital mediums.

Created by the author and illustrator Claire Faÿ,Le Cahier de dessin animé is a highly original concept which combines paper and digital mediums. "A project which unites two worlds" and that seduced Chinese publishers and their readers before finding success in Europe. The Éditions Animées team remembers...

In 2015, the author/illustrator artist Claire Faÿ, best known for her le Cahier de gribouillages pour les adultes qui s’ennuient au bureau ("The Doodle Book for adults who are bored at the office"), turned to young readers and created the first Cahier de dessin animé, a book to read, color and transform into animation with the help of a free app called BlinkBook - a project that unites two worlds. Creating an animated book is as appealing to traditional book world as it is to film industry professionals. Led by a desire to enhance paper works with digital elements and breathe new life into the traditional book without replacing it, Claire Faÿ created a brand-new collection of Cahiers de dessin animé and has set out to conquer foreign publishers.

In 2015, the year the first Cahier was published in France, the Cahiers de dessin animé was translated into English with a 20,000 copy print run. Less than a year later, China published three titles, with more than 90,000 books distributed across the book network, and more than 140,000 Cahiers de dessin animé derivative products sold. A strong trust-based relationship has been established with this Chinese partner who buys and distributes half of the titles in the catalogue. A public that is at ease with digital technologies, the Chinese immediately embraced this extraordinary concept, whereas in Europe the concept needed to be a much harder sale and careful pitching for the works to find their way to shelves in Europe. It’s not only that the format is so innovative, it’s the originality of the editorial concept, the aesthetic quality of the works and the charm of their being French, that seduces the Chinese.

In 2018, an English and German language rights contract was signed for the Cahiers de dessin animé- Picasso, co-edited with the Éditions du Centre Pompidou. The project is part of the program of European exhibitions devoted to the painter and, in particular, the one at the Tate Modern in London. This event strategy paved the way for les Cahiers winning the Enriched Children’s Book Award, given by the French Embassy in Canada, in February 2020, a year and a half later.

In 2019, the Asian distribution continued with Taiwan’s signing a contract for seven volumes of Cahiers de dessin animé. With 19 titles in the catalogue after only five years since its founding in 2015 by Claire Faÿ, the Éditions Animées continues to grow.
