Self-Portrait As a Sheep

Author Marc Dugain

GENRE Essay
The sheep adopted by Marc Dugain have things to say about the human race, those exploiters of nature.

Marc Dugain lives in a house near the edge of a cliff in Brittany. He is constantly surrounded by animals: a giant rabbit, hens, a cat, and… two Soay sheep, a rare breed. People from the village regularly stop by to ask if his pasture land is for sale, since they'd like to build houses there. To which Dugain invariably responds: "Why shouldn’t my sheep enjoy an ocean view?" A lover of sheep, he has imagined himself as one of them, the better to see humans through their eyes, and to see himself. These frank impressions give Dugain free rein for for self-critique and no-holds-barred irony. The result is a surprising work, a literary tour-de-force, and a pro-nature manifesto.
