A major figure in the French feminist scene of the 1970s, Monique Wittig (1935-2003) was one of the initiators of the wreath-laying ceremony for the Unknown Soldier's wife and was among the signatories of the Manifesto of the 343 (1971) for the right to abortion. Through her writing (The Straight Mind, The Opoponax, The Guérillères, The Lesbian Body), she intertwined the personal and the public, literature and theory, in a tightly woven political tapestry that has significantly contributed to contemporary feminist, lesbian, and queer thought.
